Terrific

In the course of renegotiating our health care benefits, the firm conveniently added $2000 yr to my premiums for family coverage. Just friggen terrific.

The old neighborhood

Grandma's block, Forest Hills.

Grandma's house

Ever since my folks passed away a few years back, this place is the only remaining link to my childhood. I've been coming here to see granny for 40 years now. Now my own kids come with me. I'm glad they've gotten to know my grandma. They're fortunate, at age 91 she is still all there mentally. Still insists on cooking and baking for us too. Very strong person, grandma is. Here's hoping for many more visits.

Oops

Just watched this truck plow into a building's scaffolding. The partial remains of the scaffolding appear on the truck's cab

Got some nice news about a watch last night

I had always assumed that the kgb letters and insignia on my Russian Type One watch were added at a later date by someone who was just trying to spice the old watch up for sale. Turns out that's not the case. It seems the watch is a real kgb award watch. Much more valuable than I originally thought.

Slow day at the office

Thankfully.

Hell on the subway

On the F train right now. A woman, about half a car away, has been ranting to her friend for the last 20 minutes about her son's school. Seems junior, despite his brilliance, has somehow fallen into bad graces with the administration. If you can remember looney tunes cartoon characters who talk in a rapid-fire style then you know what this woman's voice sounds like. Irritating does not begin to describe it. This person aspires to irritating, grating is more like it. I'd say about 15-25 people around me are cringing as well now. This ride can't end fast enough. Not the most auspicious start to the day.

Crim court

A Redbird type car. Now out of service after decades of use. On display in front of the Civil Court.

Around the neighborhood

Civic Virtue, aka Fat Boy. The history of this statue is interesting. Originally installed in front of City Hall, then mayor LaGuardia was so put off at looking at the statue's bare bottom every day that he ordered it banished from his sight and sent to the American equivalent of nowhere, Queens at the time. Here it has remained ever since, largely ignored by all who pass it. Birds excepted, of course.

Mobile blogging

Well, I think the concept of mobile photoblogging has been validated to my satisfaction via the Treo. I wonder how long it will take the media to realize how potentially useful this system could be in reporting the news as it happens. While the photo quality from the Treo 600 is nothing special, it is better than nothing at all. Furthermore, this reporting method can be widely used for very little money and there are better quality camera phones coming out all the time. I don't know if anyone, other than myself, is actually looking at this blog, but I hope that if you are seeing it that it is not a complete waste of your time.
